New to Melbourne
Car rental for new arrivals to Melbourne
Just landed, no Australian credit history yet, and the bus is not going to cut it. Weekly car rental with a refundable bond gives you a registered, serviced car from your first week while you settle in, start work or study, convert your licence or decide what to buy.

Why weekly rental works when you are new
No credit file required
A car loan or subscription usually needs an Australian credit assessment. Weekly rental does not: the refundable bond secures the car, and rent is paid weekly in advance.
Nothing to sell when you leave or upgrade
Many arrivals buy a cheap car quickly and lose money selling it months later. Renting first lets you learn the market, then buy once, properly.
Registration and servicing handled
Setting up rego, insurance and a mechanic in a new country takes time. With a rental, registration and servicing are already in place; you pay for fuel, tolls and parking. Cover and excess are explained in your agreement before you sign — ask us.
Extend month by month
Agreements are written with a planned end date and extended in writing. Keep the car for the first three months or the first year; return it when yours is sorted.
Documents
What you need to show us
The same list as for any renter. Bring the originals to pickup.
Your driver's licence
A current driver's licence. We'll confirm eligibility for your licence and age when you enquire. Tell us the country that issued it and whether it is in English.
Photo identification
Your passport is ideal. We photograph your licence at pickup and keep it securely with the agreement.
An agreed payment method
For the weekly rent and the bond. We never store full card numbers or bank details ourselves; payments go through a provider or an agreed method set up before pickup.
Where the car will live
We ask how you will use the car, roughly how far you will drive each week and where it will be parked overnight. Honest answers matter: the car may only be used as recorded in your agreement.

Licences in Victoria
Overseas licences in Victoria, in general terms
This is general public information, not legal advice. VicRoads publishes the current rules and they do change.
Visiting Victoria
If you are visiting rather than living here, you can drive on your current overseas licence. If it is not in English, carry a translation by a NAATI-accredited translator or your consulate, or an International Driving Permit from the country that issued it.
Living in Victoria
Whatever your visa, you can drive on your overseas licence for up to 6 months from the day you start living in Victoria, even if you leave and return, and must then hold a Victorian licence. Conversion steps depend on your licence; see the overseas drivers help centre at vicroads.vic.gov.au.
Conditions travel with you
Any conditions on your home licence — automatic-only, corrective lenses — apply here. Suspended or expired licences are not valid for driving.
How it works
Weekly rental from enquiry to keys
- 01
Enquire
Pick a car on the available cars page, tell us your start date and how many weeks. We confirm availability and send a written quote with the weekly rent, bond and kilometre allowance.
- 02
Pick up and sign
We check your licence and ID, photograph the car's condition together and you sign the agreement electronically. The first week's rent and the bond are paid.
- 03
Drive and extend
Pay weekly. Tell us before your planned end date if you want to keep the car and we extend in writing. Return it when you are ready; the bond follows the return inspection.

Questions from new arrivals
Do I need an Australian credit history to rent?
No. The refundable bond secures the car, so we do not rely on a local credit file. You need a current licence, photo ID and an agreed payment method.
Can I drive on my overseas licence in Victoria?
Visitors can drive on a current overseas licence; if it is not in English, VicRoads requires a translation by a NAATI-accredited translator or your country's consulate, or an International Driving Permit from the country that issued it. If you live in Victoria, VicRoads requires you to convert to a Victorian licence within 6 months of starting to live here, whatever your visa. Rules change, so check the overseas drivers help centre at vicroads.vic.gov.au for your situation.
Can I rent from you on my overseas licence?
We'll confirm eligibility for your licence and age when you enquire. Tell us the country that issued your licence, whether it is in English and your age.
Which way do you drive in Australia?
On the left, with the steering wheel on the right. Speed limits are in kilometres per hour and enforced by cameras. Mobile phone use while driving is heavily penalised.
How soon can I have a car?
If a car is listed as available now and your documents are in order, we agree a pickup time with you when we confirm the booking. Rented cars show the date they are due back, so you can plan ahead.
Can I keep the car while I decide whether to buy one?
Yes. That is the most common pattern for new arrivals: rent by the week for the first months, extend in writing, and return the car when you have bought your own.
I'm here to study. Can I rent for a semester?
Yes. Tell us your semester or placement dates and we will quote for that length; the agreement can be extended in writing if you need longer. Students rent on the same terms as anyone else.
Tell us when you land
Send your arrival date, licence country and how many weeks you expect. We will tell you what is available and what to bring.
