What Victoria requires, in general terms

Public information, not legal advice. Check Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria and your platform for the current rules.

The driver

Driver accreditation from the state regulator, including police and medical checks, plus the platform's own licence-history and age rules.

The vehicle

Registered as a commercial passenger vehicle, roadworthy, within the platform's age and body-type limits, and carrying insurance that covers commercial passenger use.

The agreement

A rental agreement that expressly permits rideshare use. Ordinary private-use rental cover does not extend to paid passengers.

Costs

What to budget for

  • Weekly rent and bond

The weekly rent and refundable bond shown on the car. Rideshare-approved cars may carry a different rate because of the insurance.

  • Fuel and tolls

The largest variable cost. Hybrids save most in stop-start city work; tolls on CityLink and EastLink add up quickly.

  • Kilometres

Rideshare work uses far more kilometres than commuting. Ask for an allowance that matches your expected hours rather than paying the extra-kilometre rate.

  • Platform and time

The platform's commission, cleaning, and the hours the car sits between jobs. Work out a conservative weekly figure before committing.

Rideshare rental questions

Can any rental car be used for rideshare?

No. In Victoria a car carrying paying passengers must be registered for commercial passenger use and insured for it, and the rental agreement must permit that use. Ask us which cars, if any, are approved before you rely on one.

What does the driver need?

Driver accreditation from the Victorian commercial passenger vehicle regulator, a current licence meeting the platform's experience rules, and an active account with the booking platform. Requirements change; check the regulator and your platform.

Is rideshare use recorded on the agreement?

Yes. If a car is rented for rideshare, the agreement records that use so the insurance applies. Using a car for rideshare without that permission breaches the agreement and voids cover.

Ask which cars are approved

Tell us your platform and expected weekly hours. We will confirm whether an approved car is available and quote the rent, bond and allowance.
